To help you better understand the types of occurrences that may happen to your carpet, the following characteristics are explained below -

  • Missing Tufts - Pets can damage tufts by scratching at the carpet pile, or alternatively, damage can be caused when moving or dragging furniture.  We at DMS Carpets can repair carpet with missing tufts, it is a good idea to keep off cuts of the carpet after installation to provide the spare tufting yarn.
  • Shedding & Fluffing - Most carpets will shed fibres when they are new, in particular woollen carpets.  This is not a carpet fault, merely a fibre residue left over from the manufacturing process. Some carpets will shed or lose fibres for longer than others, depending on the fibre.
  • Tracking/Flattening - Tracking and flattening are conditions that tend to occur in high usage areas.  The chances of these conditions occurring are greater in lower quality carpets, because generally, the pile is less dense and therefore the individual fibres can easily lay over.
  • Sprouting Tufts - The loops or tufts of carpet can get caught and be pulled by sharp objects.  If this occurs then the loop should be cut off even with the pile using a pair of sharp scissors.  Never attempt tp pull out a sprouting yarn, this will cause a run in the carpet.
  • Permanent Pile Reversal or Shading - This phenomenon may develop in any cut pile carpet.  In these instances, areas of carpet appear to become lighter or darker than the surrounding area.  This occurrence is random and largely unexplained.  It cannot be predicted or prevented and it appears to be related to location of use.  This condition is not a manufacturing fault and has no effect on the performance of the carpet.
  • Fading - To minimise fading, most of the major manufacturers use the most up to date dyes in the production of their carpets.  However, all carpets can fade to some degree, if exposed to sunlight over a long period of time.  It is recommended you have some form of window protection, such as blinds or curtains.

Carpet Grading
  • For peace of mind, look for carpets that have been graded by the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS). This is a national carpet grading scheme covering all types of carpet and all carpet fibres, according to their durability and appearance retention.
