Now that you know how the carpet is constructed you will need to know that their are three different types of commonly used fibres that gives the carpet it's own characteristic looks, feel, durability and texture -

  • NYLON - The most frequently used carpet fibre in today's market, highly desirable due to it's exceptional durability, versatility and reasonable pricing.  Nylon carpets are available in many styles and colour, twist and plush piles are the most popular.  It can be dyed in an endless variety of colours and made in numerous textures.  Nylon is commonly used in residential and commercial applications.
  • POLYPROPYLENE - Also known as Olefin, this fibre resists fading, generates low levels of static electricity, is favourably priced, and can be engineered in outdoor applications.  Due to it's manufacturing process, polypropylene inherently resists stains, making it extremely easy to clean. When used in rental properties or medium traffic commercial areas, this yarn will perform as well as most resilient fibres.
  • WOOL - The most expensive of the three fibres listed here, it is a natural fibre with only moderate soil and stain resistance as wool is porous therefore Scotchguard™ing would penetrate the carpet rather than protect it, however is very durable and luxurious.  Wool carpets are available in more styles than nylon but are more limiting in colour choice.

A good quality wool carpet will more times than not out last other carpet types, however there are many things to consider, depending on your requirements, that's where DMS Carpets can assist you in making an informed decision.

One of the most important decisions in selecting your carpet is making a wise colour choice, a serviceable colour will add years to your carpet.  Also importantly do not go overboard with professional cleaning, it will over time take the tension and stretch out of your carpet, a vacuum twice weekly will help the longevity of your carpet.  If your carpet does require professional cleaning than Dry Cleaning would be our recommended method rather than Steam Cleaning.

Carpet Grading
  • For peace of mind, look for carpets that have been graded by the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS). This is a national carpet grading scheme covering all types of carpet and all carpet fibres, according to their durability and appearance retention.
